Southwest Health’s Family Medicine providers in the Platteville, Cuba City, and Kieler Clinics are supporting healthy early parent-child relationships through shared reading. In 2023, Southwest Health Family Medicine providers handed out 2,705 books to children under the age of five. With the support of the national Reach Out and Read Program, Southwest Health Family Medicine providers foster a relationship to reading by handing out age-appropriate children’s book at each well-child visit from birth to age five. During routine well-child visits, providers discuss Reach Out and Read with parents and caregivers about how to use books to engage with their infants and young children. They give the child age-appropriate books to take home and read together with their family. This approach helps improve children’s language and literacy skills while also strengthening parent-child relationships. The research around the Reach Out and Read program, which includes more than 100,000 survey responses, show that parents/caregivers exposed to the program are significantly more likely to read with their infants and young children every day and to use books to engage with their young children, starting at infancy.
